ATI Vs Nvidia!
ATI, the graphics division of AMD is working full force to win the battle which is going on between them and Nvidia, I know that right now Nvidia is the king when it comes to high-end graphics cards, their single gpu GeForce GTX 285 and dual gpu GeForce GTX 295 are unbeatable but ATI is taking the lead in mid-range cards with price vs performance ratio.
ATI, after cutting prices for their Radeon HD 4800 series has become very competitive for Nvidia in mainstream level.

Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 VS ATI Radeon HD 4870!
ATI Radeon HD 4870 is a performance mainstream video card that performs close to and in some games neck-to-neck with Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 260 (216 Core) video card and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 260 (216 Core) graphics card is available for around $240.00 whereas ATI’s Radeon HD 4870 card sells for around $210.00, so, price/performance ratio wise ATI wins here.
Nvidia recently launched GeForce GTS 250 video card and Radeon HD 4850 video card which sells for around $150.00 is the main competitor of GeForce GTS 250. Benchmarks seen over at internet shows that GeForce GTS 250 takes the lead in most of the games over Radeon HD 4850 and GeForce 9800 GTX+.
If you will compare GeForce GTS 250 to Radeon HD 4870, GeForce GTS 250 will left behind by Radeon HD 4870 in almost all of the games, so, I don’t think there is any point in comparing GTS 250 with HD 4870.
This battle which is going on between ATI and Nvidia is not going to over here because when one company take some action the other one does something in it’s reaction, so, expect more to come your way, it’s good for you. 🙂

GTS 250 Price And Availability:
At the moment there are only three GeForce GTS 250’s are available and most of them are available for pre-order, from three available cards one is from XFX which is a 512MB version with stock clocks for $149.99 and the other one is from Gigabyte for $179.95 which is a 1GB version with Zalman cooling fan installed on it and there is also a 512MB overclocked version from BFG available for $169.99.
These GeForce GTS 250 video cards are based on 55nm G92b, featuring 128 stream processors, these card require only one 6pin power supply connector.

Nvidia high-end video cards, both single chip gpu GTX 285 and dual chip gpu GTX 295 with water cooling are reported to launch by two of the Nvidia partners.
Water Cooled GTX 285
EVGA is the first one to release a GTX 285 graphics card with water-cooling block installed on it. Though there is no design change in pcb they simply slap the water block on the card, despite the fact that it’s a reference designed video card it’s water cooling solution sure helps with better overclocking.
Clocks Of The Card
This card comes with core clock of 720MHz upped from 648MHz of reference and has 1GB of 512-bit GDDR3 memory which is clocked at an amazing 2770MHz which is default at 2484MHz and shader clock raised to 1,620MHz from 1476MHz. This card has 240 Processing Cores and at the moment it’s the best single chip gpu.

Now let’s move to dual chip gpu, here, BFG is the proud one to introduce a water cooled GTX 295. Alas it’s a reference designed pcb with default clocks, mean it’s not a factory overclocked card but a video card with a water cooling block from Danger Den installed on it, this water block covers GPU, RAM, voltage regulators, and I/O chip thus this graphics card works cooler than the one with Nvidia reference cooling solution, water cooling makes it a perfect choice if you like to overclock your card yourself, but still if you want a factory overclocked water cooled GTX 295 wait till the month of March, 2009.

Since it’s a reference card it’s both GPUs runs at 576MHz, it has total 1792MB (896MB x 2) of GDDR3 memory which is clocked at 1998MHz, shader clock is at 1242MHz and this video card comes with a total of 480 processing cores which is 240 processing cores for each GPU.

Availability and Price:
At the moment price and arrival of both of these cards is unknown, so, we should wait and see, you can expect to pay a hefty amount to purchase one of these cards.

Some Nvidia partners are reporting increased sales in last month than year 2008’s last quarter. This impressive change was the result of Nvidia’s dual gpu card GTX 295 and single gpu card GTX 285 release. Also Nvidia’s GTX 260 55nm card, 9600GT and 9500GT cards are selling well too, specially 9600GT and 9500GT 1GB versions are selling like crazy. Buyers prefer video cards with 1GB of memory instead of 512MB even though there is no performance difference at all and even if there is any advantage it’s not much noticeable.
But Nvidia isn’t stopping here, they have more plans and one of them is to rename their G92 series, which will rumoured to come next month on CeBIT 2009 trade show in Germany. First card to get a new name will be GeForce 9800 GTX+, it will renamed to GeForce GTS 250 and second card will be GeForce 9800 GT to get name GeForce GTS 240, you have been hearing about these mid-range Nvidia cards to get renamed, now next month you will probably see them, if the rumours are true. Though these cards are getting new names specifications of these graphics cards are all identical except for a new VBIOS.
I don’t get it, why re-release a video card that is already in the market? who would buy it? let’s hope they come with some improvements over GeForce 9800 GT and GeForce 9800GTX+ edition.

A newer version of PhysX system software has been released on 30-Jan-2009 and it’s verion is 9.09.0121. This new version is intended to take care of various issues with older version of the PhysX system software, 9.09.0010, which was released 13-Jan-2009 and comes included with official GeForce driver version 181.22 which was released 22-Jan-2009.
In particular it fixes the problems with some games, PhysX SDK runtime environment in multi-GPU configurations, installation and graphics accelerator related. There are some performance improvements reported in GeForce GTX 285 and GeForce GTX 295 gpu’s. These PhysX system software are recommended to use with EA’s pc game Mirror’s Edge for best performance and to get rid of random crashes.

Nvidia has released their GTX 285 graphics card based on GT200b chip. This card is fabricated at 55nm process technology, it’s an indication of Nvidia’s transitioning to 55nm manufacturing process, first their dual-gpu card now this single gpu card. Unfortunately there are no backpalte on these cards because memory ICs of GTX 285 are placed on the front of the card so a backplate is not required. These extremely fast GTX 285 cards will tear through complex DirectX 10 environments and cinematic effects at ultra fast frame rates. What’s the difference between GTX 280 and GTX 285 (GT200b)? not that much expect few here and there, beside that both are identical GPUs. Number of Stream Processors are same for both gpus at 240. Core Clocks was 602Mhz for GTX 280 and for GTX 285 it’s 648Mhz, GTX 280 Shader Clocks are 1296Mhz and GTX 285 Shader Clocks are 1476Mhz, Memory Clocks of GTX280 are 1053Mhz (2106Mhz Effective) and GTX285 has 1242Mhz (2484Mhz Effective), Memory Amount is same for both at 1GB of GDDR3, Memory Interface is also same for both at 512-bit. This new card was introduced with NVIDIA’s flagship GeForce GTX 295 video card and it has become the fastest single gpu card by replacing Nvidia’s GTX 280.
With it’s smaller die size and 55nm fabrication process technology you get better performance and it takes less voltage resulting in less power consumption and lesser heat. The TDP (Thermal Design Power) (peak wattage) is now rated at 183 Watts compare to GTX 280 at 235W. And it requires two six-pin power connectors instead of one eight-pin and one six-pin power connectors. 3-way is SLI supported with GTX285.
At the moment price ranges between $379.99 to $429.99 for this newly launched card.

Nvidia has issued new PhysX system drivers version 9.09.0010 for its GeForce 8, 9 and GTX 200 series desktop GPUs as well as all AGEIA PhysX PPUs (Physics Processing Unit), even supports GTX 295 and GTX 285 which is going to launch on January 15th. It takes out the problem of crashing on some systems where PhysX is enabled while EA’s Mirrors Edge is running.
Improving of performance in some PhysX enabled games for GeForce GTX 285 and GTX 295 cards. It also take cares of the PhysX SDK runtime engine issues with multi-GPU configurations in Hybrid environments. These drivers have all the latest PhysX SDK Runtimes including the latest PhysX runtimes used in the latest game titles.

All the rumores about Nvidia’s GTX 295 card have been put to rest as Nvidia has officially released their GTX 295 and GTX 285 cards of enthusiast level and with the announcement of this new card, ATI’s HD4870 X2 has been dethroned and GTX 295 is the new king of GPUs. 8th January was the date of release for GTX 295, it has an MSRP of $499 and GeForce GTX 285 will hit the market on 15th January with a MSRP of $399 USD.

After leaked drivers it’s time for official ones, Nvidia has officially issued new drivers, which are WHQL-certified drivers and version is 181.20.

These new drivers support GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9 and 200 series desktop GPUs which includes GTX 295 and GeForce GTX 285 cards too which are GT200B chip based cards and fabricated on 55nm process technology. New ForceWare 181.20 drivers fixes some glitches from different games.

These drivers will enable Nvidia SLI technology on SLI-certified Intel X58 chipset based motherboards with all SLI-certified GPUs.

With these ForceWare drivers you can turn on Nvidia PhysX acceleration on a dedicated GeForce video card. You can use one card for graphics and another one for PhysX processing for game-changing physical effects. (Note: Nvidia PhysX is supported on GeForce 8-series, 9-series and 200-series GPUs with at least 256MB of dedicated graphics memory. This drivers package will automatically install PhysX System Software version 8.10.13).

These days you see a lot around the web about Nvidia, it looks like Nvidia is working full force to regain it’s title of GPU king, this competition between Nvidia and ATI/AMD is working really great for us gamers bringing latest technologies at lower prices, last year both companies bring some of the most powerful cards to the market and I am hoping same for this year.

Starting Q2 ’09 the Santa Clara, California based chip maker will have 40nm fabrication processed high-end gpu, 40nm fabrication process will reduce manufacturing costs resulting in cheaper gpu’s and gpus consuming less power.

In year 2009 all the gpu’s from Nvidia up from Enthusiast level down to Value level all of them will be fabricated in 40nm technology. Nvidia has planned to wipe out its whole gpu lineup with new 40nm fabricated gpus by late Q3 2009. The Santa Clara, California based chip maker first 40nm gpu is expected to hit the market in February/March though exact date of arrival is not confirmed yet.

Nvidia has already released their G200b core 55nm GTX 260 cards and their GTX 295 and GTX 285 graphic cards are about to hit the market.

GT214 and GT216 are to replace G94 and G96 video cards in Mainstream level. GT218 is to replace G98 video card from Value level. Nvidia will bring a newer IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) too, the iGT209, all these gpus will hit the market early in Q3 2009 and later in forth quarter of 2009 GT212 will be replaced too by a powerful GT300 video card in Enthusiast and Performance level.
